• Tell me what you're planning to write about
• Come up with a thesis sentence and opening paragraph

• 2 sources from JSTOR & EBSCOhost that will be related to your essay
• These sources should be the same sources your planning to use for your final paper

Answer the following questions using JSTOR and EBSCOhost.  Use the Research Resources tab, or the South Texas College website to access the database system/s.

1.       Using JSTOR key word [Americo Paredes]. Find an article written for Western Folklore in the Winter-Spring of 2005, vol. 64.

·         What is the author/s name?

·         What is the title of the article?

2.       Using EBSCOhost key words [borderlands] [gender] [chicano]. Find article titled Migrant Longing, Courtship, and Gendered Identity in The U.S.-Mexico Boderlands. Using the abstract, tell me what the article is about.

3.       Using JSTOR key word [Chasing Amy] find article written by Bert Cardullo in the Spring of 1998.

·         What is the name of the article?

·         Who is Holden named after according to Cardullo? (will have to read some of the article)

4.       When searching EBSCOhost key words [border] [gender] [chicano] [colonia]. What are your search results?

5.       Using JSTOR key words [Cisneros] [Never Marry A Mexican] how many total search results are available? What is the first article that is mentioned and who wrote it?

Answer the following questions:

2. “The task of writing researched papers that express original arguments presents many difficulties”(Kantz, 1990, p.75).

• Tell me what the author means by this quote

3. Tell me about Alice.

• The difference between her and Shirley
• What kind of advice did she give Shirley?

4. Tell me about Time Based Organizational Patterns (TBOP). How does Kantz explain it in the following quote?

“The writing version of Shirley's problem, which Flower calls "writer-based prose," occurs when Shirley organizes what should be an expository analysis as a narrative, especially when she writes a narrative about how she did her research” (Kantz, 1990, p. 78).

Film Studies Essay: Chasing Amy

Answer One of the following questions in short answer form (2-3 pages).  You will be evaluated on the following criteria: (1) quality of writing—clarity, organization of paper, good intro, good closing, well developed body paragraphs; (2) meaningful integration of lecture and film discussion. Film outline and minutes can be found under the ASSIGNED READINGS tab.

1.      Hooper X is probably the most eccentric character in the film. How does knowing the CONTEXT of his character reinforce social issues of today?

2.      Throughout the film, Holden seems to be on a path of self-discovery.  Give examples of his view of BINARY relationships and how they clash with Alyssa’s point of views. Is he a dynamic character? Does he mature or grow as a person?

3.      One of the themes in the film is the issue of sex.  Do you agree with any of the character’s in their views, or do you have a completely different idea? Use examples in the film to compare/contrast with your own.
